Student Health Provison & Therapy

The College nurses are an integral part of the cross-disciplinary therapy team. The nurses have close links to visiting professionals and outside agencies such as the local General Practitioner and Community Pharmacy.

The nursing team participate in the assessment of Learners entering college and through this process identify specific health and/or training requirements to enable staff to fully support Learners at College.

Each of the nurses has Special Interests related to health issues and constantly update and consolidate their knowledge. All Learners are able to consult the Eating Support & Nutrition Service at Beaumont College. This is led by a Speech & Language Therapist with specialism in eating difficulties, and a Dietician who has experience in the eating, drinking & nutritional needs of the Learners we support. We aim to promote the general health and well being of Learners at Beaumont College. We have developed and provide a comprehensive screening, assessment and ongoing support service for all Learners regarding nutrition, eating and drinking. In addition we advise student support staff on management of these needs. All our staff are trained to support the Learners appropriately at meal and snack times they also support the Learners appropriately with respect to their overall nutritional needs. Our restaurant staff ensure that Learners meals are varied, offer appropriate textures, and adequate nutritional provision for individual student dietary needs. Liaison with parents, carers, and other health professional is important to ensure our Learners needs are met. The Eating Support & Nutrition Service also work with nursing staff and key workers in supporting Learners who have non-oral intake.

Therapy

The college provides a range of services to support Learners to access the curriculum, including occupational therapy and physiotherapy.

Where possible these therapies are carried out as part of everyday life and incorporated into educational settings. All of our therapy programmes are individually tailored and based on a thorough assessment and evaluation of each student’s needs. Therapists also run additional groups such as “Wheels and Move”, “Stretch and Chill”, “Mat Aerobics” and Hydrotherapy. Orthotics and wheelchair clinics are also run on site with visiting support from external services. The Learners have access to a wide range of equipment such as walking harnesses, air chair and adapted bikes which the therapy team support theme to use.
